Hamels has had a rough couple of outings, giving up 14 ER and 20 hits in only 6.1 innings and elevating his ERA from 3.02 to 3.91. He is 3-5 with a 4.74 ERA on the road this year. The Cubs are 26-104 (.250) against him. Coghlan is 9-26 (.346) with 2 HR--and sitting.

Go Cubs!

well damn... hamels no-hitter and 2 losses in a row to the f'n phillies. that was turrible. also, n.ramiez still doesn't look like his pre-injury self even though he had an effective inning in the game. also also, omfg that last out.

Well done Cole Hamels. Now, Cubs, pull your heads out of your asses and starting beating bad teams. Startiing tomorrow. And, the effing Giants win again...crappy weekend so far.

1st no hitter I ever witnessed in person. Really exciting...Wrong team.

Bubble burst - or Carriage tuned back into the pumpkin with this game for me. This season has been gravy so far. It will be interesting to see if they can re-boot, relax and just fucking hit. Its so "Cub" that Castro has turned into Bobby Scales or Ronny Cedeno right at the Trade Deadline, and Cole Hamels - whom they have been courting - throws a no-hitter before any deals were made, and Vogelbomb is on the DL. Plus, Baez breaks his finger... Sometimes you have to just scratch your head with these occurences.

Today, a very good pitcher had very good stuff -- that happens. Yesterday, to me, was the bad loss -- a good, veteran team (they who shall not be named) would never have lost yesterday's game. So many chances to win, none of them seized. In the words of Crash Davis: "Fuck this fucking game. I fucking quit..........Who do we play tomorrow/"

Let's see. The Cardinals lost their #1 prospect in a tragic accident over the winter, lost their #1 pitcher for the year, and two of their key starting position players for a good chunk of the year. The Dodgers lost their #3 and #4 starter, Puig and Crawford for most of the year. Both are in first place. I would say their "occurrences" have been WAY worse than Castro sucking and two prospects being hurt. Every team has "occurrences." You could look back at Olt getting hurt as one but it got Bryant up sooner. Good teams suck it up and keep winning. I believe that Maddon and these kids will do the same.

Expectations for LA, STL and the Cubs were very different at the start of the year, and the Cubs are starting 3 or 4 rookies every day. Cubs don't have Kershaw/Greinke/Gonzalez or Molina/Peralta/Heyward/Rosenthal -- i.e. successful veterans with MLB experience . Cubs are a bunch of kids (other than Lester) who are learning life in the big leagues or trying to sustain success for the first time. They aren't a consistently good team yet, and they are not yet a finished product, but they are headed in the right direction.

For sure. This lineup isn’t exactly stacked as is, and subbing out a Cooper or even a Tauchman for Madrigal won’t do it any favors.

the ESPN bottom graphic taking up 1/8th of the screen sucks.

i only use ESPN during baseball season and i'm forced to watch a baseball broadcast designed to be broadcast in sports bars and betting parlors where the news/scores of other games is as important as what you're actually tuned in to watch.

morel triple to start the season....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

  • Arizona Phil (view)

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.
