Braves @ Cubs: Harrell vs Hammel (Game 85)

I'm afraid of everyone. ATL (28-57): RHP Lucas Harrell (1-0, 1.50) CHC (52-32): RHP Jason Hammel (7-5, 3.45) First pitch: 7:05pmCST Hammel sucked ass in New York on Friday (4 IP, 10 ER, 3 K, 2 BB)—and not in a good way. The Braves are 39-108 against him (.361). Freeman is 5-11 with 2 HR. Harrell won in Miami his last time out (6 IP, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB). This is his second start after his stint with the LG Twins in Korea, where he posted a 4.93 ERA in 171 innings. The Cubs are 5-22 (.227) against him. Rizzo is 2-7. The game is a make-up from April 30th. It would have been better to play it then, to say the least. After the getaway night game (?), it’s back on the road to Pittsburgh for a weekend series, with Arrieta (12-3, 2.33) versus Liriano (5-8, 5.34) tomorrow at 6:05pmCST. Go Cubs!

"Hammel sucked ass in New York on Friday..." you got that right. high-5. "...and not in a good way." bruh.

Tonight LaStella lead off Zobro clean up

some random fan fell out of the OF bleachers @wrigley onto the warning track...had to be carted off.

hammel's HR woes continue in the 1st inning...damn. 32 team homers allowed since june 20th (wtf)

these "cubs fans come lately" fans are kinda weird. they cheer for weird stuff, they can't tell a popout 20+ ft from the track from a HR, they get over-hyped by a HBP as if the pitcher just walked up and stabbed a guy in the face...among other things. the "bottom 9th style" stand-and-cheer session over baez at the plate with men on 2nd/3rd in the 5th with 2 outs was a bit out of place. it's nothing new to fandom, but there's a whole lot of them this season...for obvious reasons. at least they're happy and engaged. welcome to realizing baseball exists newschool and casual fans. stick around a few years. woo.

...and hammel is throwing trash. 4 balls in a row...88-91mph...not good. that's just not good. ...and he's done...t.wood in, hendricks warming. ...and now it's hendricks's turn after wood gets 2 outs.

CUBS!@#@!$@!$!@$!$!!! DAT LEAD IN THE 8th! ZOOBREST!!! CONTRERARARARAS!

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

next time i roll up into wrigley i'll try to start a fist fight and maybe we'll meet.

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.

I was there for the PCA homer as well. 50 degree baseball is no longer fun when sitting in the shade (knit hats, scarves and gloves are football gear) but I agree it’s one of those really cool moments. I loved the bear hug given by Swanson at home plate and of course the added impact that the PCA homer became a game winner.

In honor of dispatching with the Astros, this painting is titled “The Sweep”.
I retired a couple years ago, and took a job at Wrigley as a security guy. SO cool having Wrigley as your office. SO cool being there when PCA got his first hit.
“The Sweep” happens at the end of every game - the security staff sweeps through the ballpark making sure it’s empty.
(Hopefully I’ll be putting this painting up often this year.)
Lastly, because working for the Cubs, they understandably don’t want you voicing opinions on social, which is why I’m only painting the banners here.

Honorable mention to Jim Bullinger via BleedCubbieBlue:

Bullinger, a converted shortstop, had pitched in three games before he came to the plate. He had entered the game to relieve starter Shawn Boskie after four innings, and came to the plate to lead off the fifth, and hit Rheal Cormier's first pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead; they eventually won the game 5-2 in 14 innings. Of the 129players to homer in their first MLB at-bat, Bullinger is one of just 32 to hit that blast on the first big-league pitch he saw (including Contreras) and one of just six pitchers to do so.

Most of this activity will lead nowhere, of course, but it is fantastic that they’re looking for talent in every nook and cranny. You never know where that can lead, and virtually nothing is lost if if leads nowhere, as long as no one of superior talent and potential is losing an opportunity.
