Hammel was stellar against the Dodgers on Tuesday, keeping LA off the board for 7.2 in the game the Cubs won on Denorfia’s walk-off sac fly in the 10th. Hammel last pitched against St. Louis last May, giving up 5 ER in 5.1 and taking the loss. The Cards are 31-89 (.348) against him. Heyward is 8-14, and Peralta is 8-20 with 2 HR.

Martinez has a couple of rough outings in May, including one against the Cubs (3.2 IP, 7 ER, 9 H, 4 BB) but has otherwise been good. He gave up 3 ER (including a 2-run bomb to Stanton) in 7 innings in Miami for the win his last time out. The Cubs are 12-37 against him. Denorfia is 3-3, Montero is 2-4, Rizzo’s one hit in 5 ABs is a HR.

Tonight is the return of Neil Ramirez, who hasn’t pitched since April 15 (right shoulder inflammation). He went 3-3 with a 1.44 in 50 games last year for the Cubs. And Soler will start his rehab assignment this week and be back before the All-star Break.

The matchups for the series with the Mets look like: Hendricks (2-4, 4.46) vs. Niese (3-7, 412), Lester (4-6, 4.43) vs. Colon (9-6, 4.89), and Arrieta (7-5, 2.94) vs. DeGrom (8-5, 2.15).

Go Cubs!

Grrrr, no recapping tonight, as mlb.tv feed is blocked out on the silly presumption that I can watch it over cable.  Heh.

Guess I'll listen to Pat and Ron...  Shame, I'd love to see Martinez vs. Bryant, Rizzo...

rain delay...meeeeeeeeeeh. no rain yet, expected to rain in about 25-30 minutes...not expected to last too long.

Ian Happ, solo HR for the Emeralds. Schwarber caught, went 1-3 and a walk Olt 2-4 including a double and now another rain delay in Stl, no score bottom 2nd. Hopefully won't last long enough to mess with Hammel; ESPN goes to the Orioles vs Tribe

I don't mind the Cubs getting swept by the Cardinals now and again, and always expect to turn the tables on them somewhere down the road--but why do people like to refer to an historic rivalry between these two teams? Can a rivalry be something that is felt on one side only? From the point of view of the Cardinals--the second most successful franchise in ML history after the Yankees--and their fans, when have the Cubs been other than just another team--and a bumbling one, at that?

cards fans have been making that point for many years. they don't even get hyped up when the cubs are actual competitors. sosa vs mcgwire was rather harmonious between themselves and fans. it doesn't have to be all static when rivals meet, but there should be a sense of importance of winning besides the overall w/l record. for all intents and purposes, especially in the new schedule era, the cubs biggest rivalry is the wsox. people still care about that one even if the wsox are on the ropes currently.

2300+ games. All time record is Cubs 1191, Cards 1143. They made the point on the broadcast last night that they would expect the Cards to have the all time lead. I would have expected that as well, by more than a fair margin. I guess it depends on what you consider a historic rivalry. The Cards have been so much better recently, it doesn't seem like much of one for recent history. But history goes back a ways.

Cubs/Cards has been the same as Bears/Packers for quite some time. They know they are better, we know they are better, and they win almost every time -- and yet it is always referred to as an "historic rivalry". Really sucks. Very rough series for Addison -- hope he can bounce back. Maybe he learned something about how good pitchers attack inexperienced hitters with RISP.

KC down to 5 AS reps in the vote for position players (from 7, then 6 after the "vote adjustment" throwing out millions of votes) o.infante and his .237/.243/.320 slash is still leading 2nd base voting...because lol.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
