Update: Russell moves to SS in preparation for the arrival of a little Castro. Let's hope the baby is healthy (and delivered error free) and that Addison's move is permanent.

Lester was solid his last time out, in Minnesota, giving up 1 ER over 6.1 but didn’t get the win in a game the Cubs won 4-1. Apart from not having a win since May 16, Lester is still working through some strange splits: lefties are hitting .319; righties hit .258. (This started last year.) The Dodgers are 22-97 (.227) against him. Kendrick (6-23), Callaspo (3-18), and Rollins (1-11) have the most ABs.

Frias joined the rotation in May, after working out of the bullpen in a couple of appearances. He took the loss against the Giants in his last outing, offering up 6 ER through 5.1. He pitches better on the road (2-2, 2.96) than at Dodger Stadium (2-3, 5.86) but not so much with the day games. In his 4 day starts, he’s 1-2 with a 9.28 ERA. A handful of Cubs have faced him once but none with a hit.

A win wins the series, so let’s do that--before hitting the road and heading into the belly of the beast. And maybe the Cubs should think about steam-cleaning the visitors’ clubhouse after the Dodgers leave.

The matchups for series with the Cards looks like: RHP Arrieta (7-5, 3.07) vs. RHP Lackey (6-4, 3.41), LHP Wada (1-1, 3.73) vs. RHP Wacha (9-3, 2.85), and RHP Hammel (5-2, 2.65) vs. RHP Martinez (8-3, 2.89). Wada is still iffy for Saturday. Maddon said it will probably not be Wood, if Wada can’t go. (He likes him where he is.) E-Jax starting in St. Louis--what could go wrong?

Go Cubs!

Starlin Castro scratched from lineup and will likely be going on the Paternity Leave List (minimum 24 hours - maximum 72 hours).

Russell plays SS and Herrera plays 2B today, with Castro's replacement on the 25-man roster TBD (probably Arismendy Alcantara) when he officially goes on Paternity Leave.

If I had to guess, I would say Castro will probably go on the Paternity Leave List tomorrow, miss the three games at St. Louis over the weekend, and be reinstated on Monday and return to the lineup Tuesday night at New York.

Thought I would be able to recap afternoon game here, but I think instead I will be seeing live baseball - Lucas Giolito is the away pitcher against the Wilmington A-ball team, a short drive away from here.  If someone would guarantee this Cubs game would last 2 hours and not much more, I could recap this, then head to that.... hmmm...

Wow, so Lester gets all huffy with the home plate ump, who then tries to walk out to the mound to confront Lester.  Ross gets between the ump and Lester and effectively blocks the ump off from getting at lester.  Ump starts pointing his finger at Ross in anger.  Maddon comes out to support Ross's efforts, and now Maddon is getting it from the ump, too.  Now Maddon is marching the ump back toward home plate and is the one chewing out the ump!  No one ejected from all of this...  yet...

Well, with this lineup, Lester is really going to have to....never mind. Didn't expect him to be such a hot-or-cold guy. 6 through 9: Baxter-Ross-Lester-Herrara. Woo.

Bryant leaves with "flu-like symptoms." Isn't that twice now? Lay off the late nights Kris!

if lester can get through this inning getting 3 outs all from fielded balls then he can have a line of... 4ip 4h 4r 4er 4bb 4k edit - he got a K...what a loser.

Geez Lester...Dead Horse meet kick... As I've said, $155MM doesn't buy what it used to. Interesting that Scherzer is pitching lights out and was like the "runner-up" in top FA pitchers last season. I am hoping this will not turn out to be EJax II.

uh oh...you brought up money! now everything you said is an invalid point. lulz...sigh. scherzer was the "runner-up" option to the team and to those who thought it was stupid for the cubs to give up a 2nd round pick even though it may be the last time they had a protected 1st round pick. they did make an offer on him, but it wasn't close. i expect lester to turn it around, but it would be nice if he also fixed some of the obvious flaws of his game others are exploiting. i kinda wonder what will happen as he ages and/or loses velocity on his fastball and he has to adapt...can he even adapt or does he have to do it like he's always done it even if his body won't let him?

Hoping for a split coming into the series -- then, after "beating" Kershaw and Greinke, had higher hopes, particularly given today's pitching match-up. Nuts. This team is now -1 vs. .500 during the day, +8 at night. So, now hoping for 2 of 3 in Moran-town.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
