After a horrendous start to the season (0-2, 6.23 ERA in April), Lester has really turned things around. He went 4-1 and sported a crisp 1.76 ERA in May. In his 3 starts on the road this year, opponents are hitting .221. Ichiro is batting .343 in 35 ABs against Lester, and could probably hit even higher now if he just tapped them all back to the mound. Baker is 7-11 with a HR.

Haren, who would almost not pitch at all rather than pitch for the Marlins, gave up 2 ER in 7 innings against the Mets in Flushing in his last appearance. He struck out 4 and walked 1 for the 4-3 win. Only three Cubs, Coghlan (5-19), Fowler (1-10), and Montero (3-17) have more than 5 ABs against Haren.

Update/update: Soler's on the DL, Baxter is back. Meanhile Baez is playing 3b at Iowa. If he’s called up on June 11 or later, the Cubs have him under control for another year--not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Go Cubs!

I have heard that Soler is headed back to Chicago. Is that for the MRI or additional testing?

Looks like Baez is playing third tonight. For those keeping count, the 11th is a week from Thursday.

I've written on this when Castro injured his ankle last Sept. Minor sprains are 2 weeks, moderate 4 weeks and severe 6 or more. High ankle sprains are 6 or more. Not sure what the are saying the MRI is showing but I'll update when I have better info.

My guess is Baez is recalled sooner than 6/11 to play 3B; Bryant goes to LF and some kind of Coghlan/Lake/Baxter platoon in RF. Baxter probably 1x/week starting. Six weeks without Soler puts a big hole in the lineup and question is how much of a contender do Theo/Jed/Joe think they are? A yes answer could see a deal for an outfielder or even Schwarber recalled. Then after the All Star break, decisions will be made: keep Baez, Schwarber up? trade Castro? deal for a starting pitcher.

Since he is going to need to play some number of games at third in Iowa, I don't think the Cubs will give up a year of control for a couple of games in the bigs. It may depend on how many lefties they face in the next week as Lake can take Soler's spot against right handed pitching.

Nifty. I don't think I did that, though. If I did, this thing is even quirkier than I thought.

If someone else is playing around under the hood, you might want to look into why I can load the main page in Chrome. It works fine in Firefox.

Check that: I can see the main page in Firefox, but once I sign in, it's gone.

Good times.

To wit: Script error: local_262389.xml is not writable. Please set write permissions on local_262389.xml.

CT STEVE: I have been unable to access TCR in the normal way for the last hour or so.

I'm getting:

Script error: local_262389.xml is not writable. Please set write permissions on local_262389.xml

I have to use Google cache to get into the site. The article titles are now blue instead of black (don't know why), and that was not the case before.the problem started. It might be related to that.

CTSteve, I assume you guys are still using Drupal. Go into your root directory and search for local_262389.xml. That directory doesn't have write permissions. It's probably a directory that contains temporary files - you'll need to change permissions to a safe writing mode for the directory that contains local_262389.xml - not sure what those permissions should be in Drupal, though.

holy shit. lester being good at keeping guys off base is nice, but when he lets guys on base things can get crazy...from the leads themselves, to the leads killing multiple-out plays. he's one of the few pitchers where multiple singles can play out like multiple extra-base hits and errors giving free outs away. we've seen what cubs aggressive baserunning can do as a positive...imagine if they had an extra 5-10ft to work with. it's june...this isn't a 1-year contract.

j.lake spends 30 minutes staring at a homer and the benches clear when lake does a "shhh" motion to the FLA dugout rounding 3rd. nice. aside from the "shhh" motion, i've seen worse...FLA seems a bit butthurt.

lake + j.maddon are busy barking at the FLA dugout while rizzo is running around trying to keep them in line. not so nice... meanwhile, d.jennings in the MIA dugout not giving a fuck that his star pitcher on the DL is getting worked up on the railing over this...also meanwhile, the cubs are scoring runs.

We are the TheoJed. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. I perhaps watched too much Star Trek: Next Generation at one point in my life.

Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.
