Phillies @ Cubs: Eickoff vs Hendricks (Game 47)

Smooth sailin’…PHI (26-22): RHP Jerad Eickoff (2-6, 3.86)
CHC (32-14): RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-4, 3.30)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Hendricks lost in San Francisco (5.1 IP, 1 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) on Sunday in a game Bumgarner and the Giants won 1-0. Hendricks is 1-1 with a 2.38 at Wrigley so far this year. The Phillies are 3-16 (.188) against him, overall. Howard, Asche, and Herrera each have a hit—all doubles.

Eickoff took his turn at beating Atlanta (7 IP, 0 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) his last time out. He’s 0-4 with a 6.43 on the road so far this year. (Nice.) For their careers, the Cubs are 3-19 (.158) against him. Baez and Montero are 1-3.

There’s a 15% chance of rain all afternoon. Hopefully, we can keep the wrap off the field.

Velasquez (5-1, 2.75) versus Lackey (4-2, 3.38) tomorrow at 1:20pmCST to close out the weekend.

Looking ahead to the Dodger series: Kershaw is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night, which means he'll miss the four-game series at Wrigley. So sad. But unless they pull him out of the rotation, we'll get to see the Urias kid, though (on Wednesday against Lester).

Go, Cubs!

Comments

Phil, when will the Cubs start moving international players from EST to the Dominican for the start of the DSL season?

First time I saw Herrera was yesterday. He took like 100 pitches, fouled off a ton off Lester. Very nice young player and perfect leadoff guy.

9 pitches in and this game already rules. HR, double...bryant's turn (who came out to a Kris Kross song for some horrible, horrible reason). ...2 run inning...zoobrest hitting streak at 14.

soler vs inside breaking balls is scary. he's had 2 inside curve balls today where he reacted as if they were about to hit him even though they weren't that close...one he bailed out of the box on, it was a called strike.

a 60" TV with slow-motion replay and multiple looks on that replay helps...a lot... it's one thing to shy away like he did the 2nd time, it's another to bail out of the box on a called strike. that happened in the 1st one he pulled away from. he misjudged that one by a foot or so... he's had 5 walks in his last 7 games (14 all season) and he's not swinging a foot over everything thrown low to him lately, but i wouldn't be so quick to call his eye and plate awareness excellent. he walked twice in a game on may 24th...the last time he walked twice in a game before that was august 4th, 2015. that's 211 PA between 2-walk games (though 20-ish of those PA were in games where he only got 1-2 PA).

That doesn't count b/c CRUNCH didn't see it on his 60" HDTV 5 times in replay. I have seen many players "bail out" when the ball looked like it was gonna hit them. Especially with the advent of the splitter and pitchers that can really get the ball to dance. Marmol, Sutter, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Derek Lowe, Smoltz, Arrietta... These guys have made the best bail out only for the ball to come over the plate and be called a strike. No shame in that. The same way players whiff hard enough to cause them to drill a hole in the ground from spinning. I think you may be the only one here worried about this minutiae. But of course you are entitled if it makes you feel good. I would LOVE to have a 60" HDTV at my place, btw! Waiting for them to get under $1k.

it's not like we're talking about a guy who's never had issues with pitch selection and seeing the ball over here. we're talking about a guy who has some rather legendary swing-and-misses at breaking stuff who's been exploited low. going forward it's worth paying attention to seeing if he can be exploited inside, too. he seriously bailed out of the box on a called strike. sure it was a good curve, but he obviously didn't see that well at all. let's not make some huge f'n thing about something that was noticed. a bit of criticism or something noticed isn't a call to DFA him or trade him for an infield rake.

With several other Cubs hitters bailing out on curves today I think overall it wasn't being seen well. It for sure looked silly but a good breaking pitch coming at you and then breaking down isn't the easiest thing to see and has made many hitters look silly. Also Soler should have more walks this year but for quite a few called strikes that were actual balls and even the called strike he bailed on was borderline. He's for sure had his issues with breaking pitches but I do think he's seeing the ball well this year. I think his issues have more to do with wanting to pull balls too much when he does swing which is Rizzo's problems too as the shift is killing him.

Good Hendricks sure is fun to watch. He was hitting all his corners today and the Phillies couldn't do anything with his changeup.

It would seem like he is figuring it out now and it's really coming together. Really happy for him. Joe was really protecting him from the 3rd time through the order, but as you allude to, he is earning trust to go deeper. Wondering if has potential to become a #3 pitcher? His current stats certainly support it.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.

What are the chances we can back off on gloating over other people’s misfortune?  One of the things I appreciate about the TCR community is that the remarks are more productive and add to how I like to follow the game.

Lately, however, I’m reading comments that are just mean.  If I were an MLB player, I would hate to get a back or finger injury and have someone write ‘hurrah!  I hope we never see him again!’  Especially when it is someone we were praising not long ago.  I’m not saying ‘don’t express how you feel’ but some comments lately seem downright mean spirited.  Stuff I expect from other communities but don’t often see here.  The TCR community has always spoken the truth but never with such a dark tone.

Just my two cents.  I hope Hendricks comes back and is the professor we all know. He can pitch for the Cubs as long as he wants in my book.

happ is back (and starting), mervis DH, tauchman gets RF.

morel 5th in the lineup.  hoerner continues to lead off, even vs a righty.

I don't care to see Hendricks or Smyly on the 26-man Roster the rest of the season. Both, stupid signings and option pick up by Jed.

  • crunch (view)

i know the cubs are paying the guys, but for the sake of the win/loss column this is some great news.

woo!  people getting injured!  kick ass!

    sportsball is cruel.

would have liked to keep cooper, but it looks like they're gonna go with wisdom if they have to pick a righty who's gonna K 1/3rd of his PA's.

Edwards would be my guess, or maybe they’re hoping Sanders or R Thompson can finally figure it out
