Padres @ Cubs: Rea vs Hendricks (Game 32)

What a day for a night.
SD (13-20): RHP Colin Rea (3-1, 3.82)
CHC (25-6): RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-2, 3.10)
First pitch: 12:05pmCT

Hendricks went 6 scoreless to beat the Nationals in the first game of the sweep on Thursday. The Padres are 4-46 (.087!) against him. Kemp is 2-10 with a HR.

Rea stepped right up and beat the Mets his last time out (8 IP, 1 ER, 5 Ks, 1 BB). He’s 1-1 with a 4.41 in his three games on the road this year. The 12th round pick from Indiana State made six starts in his rookie year last year, going 2-2 with a 4.26. Only Heyward (1-1, with a BB) has faced him.

Kawasaki is getting the call to be the 26th man for the double header. Update: Contrary to initial reports, it's RHP Edwards.

In DL news, Montero went 0-3 in his first rehab start for Iowa yesterday. The back pain is not gone entirely, so the trick will be to not do anything that will aggravate it—which is a tall order for a catcher.

There’s a slight chance of rain (15%) for most of the day, but it looks like we’ll be able to get both games in. There’s rain in the forecast for Friday, too.

Pomeranz (3-3, 2.12) vs Lackey (4-1, 4.02) tonight at 7:05pmCST to close out the series.

Go, Cubs!

Zimmerman hits 2 HRS, but the Tigers still IBB Harper in the 9th (potential winning run), then Zimmerman Ks. Dusty then says he doesn't understand the DP slide rule. Awesome stuff.

Heyward currently ranked 91st out of 92 qualifiers in SLG. Not only has he not hit a HR, but I can't remember him hitting anything that looked like it MIGHT be a HR off the bat. Don't know if the wrist is still bothering him or he's just in a funk (his swing looks like it's all arms to me), but right now he's a slap hitter who doesn't get on base. Great D, though.

Even Soler is outslugging Heyward (.278 to .257). Both are dreadful, yet also preferrable to Braun.

Heyward (CF); Bryant (RF); Rizzo (1B); Soler (LF); Baez (3B); Russell (SS); Federowicz (C); Hendricks (P) Kind of surprised to see Soler starting against the righty with a lefty going in game two.

Thankfully Russell and Baez were on the same page today on Russell's double - good stuff and glad to see Russell tearing it up

The error in the 1st inning was a terrible throw where he didn't have control of his body. If he was charged for another error in the 7th inning he made a very difficult throw from the ground and Rizzo just missed the ball and the out. Would be a difficult error to charge to Baez imo.

I was at the Strop Game last year, and was at today's Strop Game. Crap. I only go 4-5 times a year! Next time I am going, I will text Maddon not to use Pedro. Hopefully, he only has one of those per year, and now it's done with. What an incredibly annoying game -- the Strop shit show, Baez E-6 x2, Cubs 3-for-17 w/RISP, Cubs hitting rockets all day that don't go out and the Padres hit one ball hard and it fucking goes out, not sending Fed on a medium fly and the throw goes over the catcher's head, etc. Augh!! Heyward is an absolute mess at the plate. Another nice D play, but, yikes with the bat. Bummer for Hendricks -- he was terrific. Pen looking very shaky the last 2 days.

I am going tonight so hope the team finally gets off the Schneid. A couple of the bullpen are incredibly streaky: Strop, Grimm, Richard, Wood. I suppose the current stats show they are pretty good, and you just hope there is a lead to protect when they come in of more than a run. Before we annoint Baez Brooks Robinson, we gotta realize he just has not played any 3rd to speak of in the majors. He needs to rest for the next game, and keep working on things before he takes over full time for Bryant at the hot corner.

So far, Baez matches AZ Phil's scouting report to a T. Will pull off spectacular, high energy plays then he will mess up a much more routine play. Also will make errors trying to turn a difficult chance into an out when he might be better off putting the ball in his pocket. Pretty much what we've seen so far. Also the type of plays that will probably decrease with more experience.

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.

i know alzolay isn't having a great time right now, but i trust hector "ball 4" neris even less than alzolay based on what i've seen coming out of their arms.
