Padres @ Cubs: Vargas vs Lester (Game 31)

I’m lovin’ it.
SD (13-19): RHP Cesar Vargas (0-1, 1.10)
CHC (24-6): LHP Jon Lester (3-1, 1.58)
First pitch: 7:05pmCT

Lester beat the Pirates to complete the sweep on Wednesday (5.2 IP, 0 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BBs). The Padres are 28-135 (.207) against him. Myers is 2-5 and Norris is 3-10, both with a HR.

Vargas lost to Colorado (6 IP, 1 ER, 3 Ks, 3 BBs) his last time out. It was the 24y/o rookie’s third career start. None of the Cubs have faced him.

Rea (3-1, 3.82) vs Hendricks (2-2, 3.10) tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

It's weird to say, "Wonder how they'll find a way to win THIS game." Instead of that other thing. That I've been saying for 47 years.

It's not minor league pitching he is having trouble with. You can see him struggle with his adjustments and they are the kind of struggles I like seeing. Yesterday (or was it day before?) he took a couple called strikes. He's trying to figure this out. Best place to do that is at the level he is struggling with. This team can afford to let him keep working on it at the level that is challenging him. He'll just go to the minors, tear it up, and not learn a thing.

Yes and no. Yes b/c he needs to "figure it out". No, b/c he is not still and, the more he struggles the less playing time he's gonna obviously get. Therefore, he may benefit from a minors stint to re-group and play every day.

Jorge Soler has one minor league option left, and it's a 4th minor league option so Optional Assignment Waivers do not need to be secured before he can be sent down.

If Soler spends at least 45 days on Optional Assignment to the minors, the Cubs get an extra year of club control before he can be a free-agent (post-2021 instead of post-2020), but it wouldn't affect when he is eligible to opt-out of his current contract (post-2017) and file for salary arbitration (should he wish to do so).

Shane Victorino has two minor league options left, but because he has as much MLB Service Time as he does (10+092), he cannot be optioned or outrighted to the minors without giving his permission (in advance). That doesn't mean he wouldn't agree to be optioned (or outrighted) back to Iowa, just that the Cubs can't do it unilaterally. It would be his choice, and if he doesn't consent, the Cubs would have to either release him or trade him (or place him on the DL) to get him off the 25-man roster.

Albert Almora's slash is still okay--.318/.348/.458(/.806)--but he may be reverting to his swing-happy style. Note that his OBP is only 30 points above his BA. He hasn't drawn a base-on-balls since April 23rd, fourteen games ago.

"Yeah, but when you're a pitcher, you're not just gonna not challenge a guy because of their name and what they can do. You can't play scared. This is a game. It's not, 'Here's your free pass,' you know? Sometimes it calls for that, but I think it's scared baseball." -- Nationals starter Tanner Roark, on the Cubs' decision to walk Harper. "It's happened before to me -- not at this level, but definitely when I was younger in high school, college, what-not," Harper said. "They had a plan. They stuck with their plan, and unfortunately it worked." Harper seems to be a pretty smart guy.

Manfred just spoke on ESPN and some highlights: He spoke of pace of play with replays and while he wouldn't say what would be done he did say 4 minute replays were too long. He said about changing the DH rule in the NL he seriously doubted anything would get done to change it and doesn't think the support is there from owners. He supports the All Star rule about home field advantage and doesn't see changing it unless someone can give him an alternative that would still make the game as important.

The All-Star game thing is maddening. It's supposed to be "important", but it's an exhibition game. No other All-Star game tries to make itself "important" -- they are meant to be fun and entertaining. Gosh, I don't now -- how about best record gets home field? Gives teams with a big division lead a reason to keep playing to win.

Going to the game tonight. I fear a) a letdown loss, b) rain delays or c) both. Still working on that "Cubs positive vibe" thing.

fwiw...

@chelsea_janes Stephen Strasburg has signed a "significant long-term extension" with the Nationals, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Beginning on MLB Opening Day up through August 31st, a club can temporarily add a 26th player to its MLB Active List on any day where two games are scheduled, as long as the second game was scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. If the second game was scheduled less than 48 hours in advance, a 26th man can be temporarily added to a club's MLB Active List for the second game only.

1. The "26th man" must be on the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) or has to be added to the club's 40-man roster that day.

2. The "26th man" does not have to be a pitcher.

3. In the case of a second game being scheduled at least 48 hours in advance, the 26-man Active List limit is in effect for both games, but the "26th man" cannot be switched between games.

4. A minor league player can be added to a club's Active List as the "26th man" even if he has not spent ten days on Optional Assignment (or Outright Assignment) prior to being added.

5. A "26th man" can remain on the Active List and a different player can be dropped the next day, as long as the "26th man" was not called up from the minors prior to spending at least ten days on Optional or Outright Assignment. However, a player called up as the "26th man" prior to spending at least ten days on Optional or Outright Assignment could remain on the 25-man roster if the player replaces a player who is placed on the Disabled List (or other MLB inactive list) the next day.

6. If a player is recalled as the "26th man" and is optioned or outrighted back to the minors the next day, the "10-day rule" clock (prohibiting a player from being recalled until he has spent at least ten days on Optional or Outright Assignment, unless he is replacing a player who is placed on the DL or other MLB inactive list) does not start over again. However many days toward ten that the player spent on Optional or Outright Assignment prior to being recalled as the "26th man" counts toward the ten days.

7. The "26th man" accrues one day of MLB Service Time.

Tommy Birch ‏@TommyBirch Sounds like the tentative plan is for Montero to play four games with the Iowa #Cubs. Iowa begins a four-game homestand Tuesday. #MiLB

Catcher Miguel Montero will join Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday to begin a rehabilitation assignment and could be activated from the 15-day disabled list by this weekend. Montero has been sidelined since April 25 because of lower back tightness.
from the Tues AM Tribune, Mark Gonzales, confirms Montero info.

Addy -- that's why you look at the 3rd base coach and not over your shoulder at the RF when you round 2B. Sheesh.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

  • Childersb3 (view)

Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.
