Cubs @ Pirates: Hammel vs Cole (Game 24)

The Cubs (finally) face some real competition.
CHC (17-6): RHP Jason Hammel (3-0, 0.75)
PIT (15-10): RHP Gerrit Cole (2-2, 2.78)
First pitch: 6:05pmCST

None of the teams the Cubs have played so far are currently over .500. These next seven games will be a good test.

Hammel continued his solid start to the season, going 6 scoreless and striking out 7 to beat the Reds on Sunday in Cincinnati. The Pirates are 35-132 (.265) against him. McCutchen is 9-30 with 2 HR.

Cole won in Colorado his last time out (2 ER, 6 IP). He went 9-3 with a 2.83 at home last year. The Cubs are 28-107 (.262) against him. Rizzo is 6-17. A rainout last week permitted the Pirates to shuffle their rotation to have Cole start this game.

Speaking of rain, there’s a chance for it for all three days, but it looks like we’ll get the first two games in. Wednesday might be an issue.

With the off day and rainouts last week, Maddon is skpping Hendricks’ turn in the rotation, which would have been tomorrow. He'll next pitch against the Nationals. Instead, we'll see Arrieta (5-0, 1.00) vs Niese (3-0, 5.08) at 6:05pmCST. Good call.

Go, Cubs!

Sorry to nit-pick -- but the games against the Nats this week are at home. Can't remember a worse weather-start to a season. Yuck.

Heyward getting the night off. Grand Slammin' Sczcur in RF - La Stella batting 2nd Twitterverse reporting that Heyward is dealing with a sore right wrist

Stealing HOME?! Also, glad to see Zobrist coming around with RISP after my remarks last week. Heh!

In case you didn't see it -- it was the Little League play where the guy on first gets caught in a rundown on purpose and the guy on third tries to score. It worked. Gotta love the Pirates pitcher intentionally hitting Zobrist, then allowing Zobrist to score on a 2-out wild pitch.

One of the reasons I think Maddon is a great manager -- he has changed the conversation on Baez from HR & strikeouts to great defense, versatility and an all-around good ballplayer. He rarely talks about his offense, which is the only thing anybody used to talk about with Javy. He took a lot of pressure off the kid, and he seems to have responded.

Unless somebody goes on the 60-DL or ouright them they can't call up Shane he's not on the 40 man roster, he still on a minor league contract

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
