Cubs @ Reds: Arrieta vs Finnegan (Game 16)

After taking all three from the Reds at Wrigley last week, the Cubs attempt to do it on the road.

CHC (11-4): RHP Jake Arrieta (3-0, 1.23)
CIN (8-7): LHP Brandon Finnegan (1-0, 2.04)
First pitch: 6:10pmCST

Arrieta pitched 8-scoreless innings against the Rockies on Saturday for his third win of the young season, walking one and striking out eight. He was an astounding 13-1 with a 1.60 on the road last year, even better than his Wrigley numbers. The Reds are 16-60 (.267) against him. Phillips is 4-11, and Cozart is 4-12.

The Cubs faced Finnegan at Wrigley on April 11. He gave up 2 ER in 6.2 and ended up with a no-decision, in a game the Cubs would go on to win 5-3, thanks to Russell’s 8th-inning 3-run homer. The Cubs are 1-21 (.045) against Finnegan, with Ross being responsible for the sole hit.

Lester (1-1, 2.21) vs. Moscot (0-0, 4.76) tomorrow at 6:10pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

2nd start vs a lefty where zobrist is knocked down deeper into the lineup. i would have thought zobrist would be the guy in the 2-slot vs lefties with heyward moving back if i was betting on things...dude's put up a couple years of .400-ish ob% vs lefties. heyward pretty much owns the 2-slot in maddon's lineups...didnt think his role would be that static. looks like a lot of heyward/zobrist 2/3 vs righties and heyward/bryant 2/3 vs lefties. it's maddon, though...lineups could change to match winning lotto numbers or pop songs at any given moment. also, d.ross gets the start today. he's not been used as much this season so far. looks like he's going in back to back games with lester due up next.

Ross has a .400 OBP and he scored tonight because of his legs, he hit a HR and he also picked off a runner at 1st. Dude is on fire.

Welcome to the big leagues, kid. Ouch. Young Red pitchers not looking to impressive tonight.

it’s a little silly for the announcers to say: “fasten those seat belts” when the game goes to the bottom of the 9th with the score 13 16-0...but in this case, I'll give them a pass.

Wow.

David Ross was talking a few days ago about never having caught a no-no. Scratch that off his bucket list.

Holy shit!!!!! Of course, no thanks to the ump who blew two strikes that also would have ended the game. What is it with these guys? As Thibs says, "DO.YOUR.JOB."

18 hits and STILL 9 LOB!!! Can we play them every game? Like the Nats playing ATL and PHI?

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
